Nancy Howay Berg passed away in Fairfax, Virginia on the 21st day of September 2024 at the age of 95.
In her words, “please let people know after I pass that I’m in heaven now with Jesus”.
Born April 27,1929 Nancy to Edith (Helen) and Edward (James) Howay, Nancy grew up in Seattle, Washington and graduated Roosevelt High School.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with Honors from Whitman College 1951. Nancy had three adventurous careers. The first career was in Foreign Service that took her to posts in Cairo, Egypt where she received a meritorious service award during a coup d’etat, and Madrid, Spain. In 1959, after marrying Foreign Service Officer, Marshall Berg, and they had two children and were posted in Alexandria, Egypt; Algiers, Algeria; Ouagadougou, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso); Istanbul, Turkey; and Princeton University. Her third career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Washington, DC from 1974-1998 where she was executive secretary to the Director of Information technology at the Central Intelligence Agency. During her 24-year tenure at CIA she received multiple honors, including the Directorate of Administration’s Secretary of the Year.
In her 25+ years post retirement, Nancy focused on her passions for learning, adventure, and contributing to her community. She was a voracious reader and took courses at the Smithsonian Institute, continuing education classes in photography and computer software, and spiritual counseling (Stephen’s Ministry) and Biblical teaching classes – and was an early adopter of Apple’s latest technology and often took the Apple workshops. She loved to indulge in travel and photographic safaris in Africa and India. Nancy served multiple times on the board of her homeowner’s association. Up until end the end, her most rewarding time was mentoring young women and Christian prayer ministry.
Nancy is survived by son Eric Berg of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and daughter Kristi Berg McCutchen and son-in-law Peter McCutchen of San Rafael, California.
On Saturday, October 12th, 1 p.m., a Celebration of Life service will take place at the Whole Word Fellowship church in Oakton, Virginia.
